This prestigious recognition is awarded to senior legal practitioners who have built a strong reputation through decades of exemplary work, experience, and leadership in their field. It reflects a legacy of excellence and a continued impact on the legal market.
With a legal career spanning over 35 years, Dato’ Azmi specialises in mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, cross-border transactions, project finance, privatisation, energy, oil & gas, and foreign investments.
His early career includes a key role as an in-house legal advisor with PETRONAS, focusing on upstream operations. He has been instrumental in various major national projects such as PSC negotiations, the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Authority (MTJA), and the NGPSA gas development project. Notably, in 2007, he served on the Merger Integration Committee of Synergy Drive Sdn. Bhd., overseeing the largest corporate merger in Malaysian history.
Notable awards received by Dato’ Azmi include Asian Legal Business 2024 Dealmaker of the Year, The Legal 500 Hall of Fame for Malaysia in Corporate/M&A (2020–2025), Asia Business Law Journal’s A-List of the 100 Top Lawyers in Malaysia (2025, 2024, 2022 & 2020), AsiaLaw’s Distinguished M&A Practitioner (2023, 2021 & 2020), and other prestigious recognitions.
Under his leadership, Azmi & Associates has established itself as one of the leading law firms in Malaysia. He had also served for 7 years as a Director of TerraLex, a global network of independent law firms with 23,000 lawyers headquartered in Florida, USA.
Currently, Dato’ Azmi sits on the boards of Pelaburan Hartanah Berhad and Worldwide Holdings Berhad. In academia, Dato’ Azmi serves as Adjunct Professor of Law at Universiti Utara Malaysia. Previously, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the International Islamic University of Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He was also a Director of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan and Yayasan Putra Business School, a UPM-related private university.
He currently serves as one of the 16 elected Bar Councillors for the 2023–2025 term, further reflecting his continued commitment to the advancement of the Malaysian legal profession.
