Dato’ Azmi Mohd Ali, the Senior Partner of Azmi & Associates, graciously took time off from his busy schedule to share his thoughts on “Business Development for Small Firms” at an event organized by the Bar Council Small Firms Committee. The event was held in Muar, Johor on 7.2.2025 and drew significant attention from the legal community.

During his address, Dato’ Azmi recounted his inspiring journey in the legal profession, beginning as an associate in a one-man firm before advancing to a ten-lawyer firm. He emphasized that every lawyer must devise a strategy to grow and elevate his practice to achieve greater success. According to him, business development is a critical factor in determining the success or failure of any lawyer or law firm. He added that business development skills can be learned.

Dato’ Azmi also shared his analysis of how smaller firms in the UK have successfully merged and combined resources to grow larger, remain relevant, and compete for higher-profile work. He cited a case of a local general firm that had expanded to over 80 lawyers within four to five years as a testament to what can be achieved with the will and desire for growth.
