Gavin Chan graduated from the University of Exeter with a Second Class (Upper Division) LL.B (Hons) in 2022.
He was subsequently called to the Bar of England and Wales (Middle Temple) upon completion of the Barrister Training Course at City, University of London in 2024. During his course, he was awarded a grade of Very Competent overall, with Distinctions in Advocacy Submissions, Cross-Examination, and Conference Skills.
Throughout his academics, Gavin has had the opportunity to take part in a number of legal internships and mini-pupillages, which have greatly enhanced his working experiences. He undertook his mini-pupillage experience at Whitestone Chambers, a civil litigation firm, where he focused on drafting claim forms and defence statements along with legal research. Subsequently, he secured a mini-pupillage at Furnival Chambers, a firm focused on criminal litigation work, where he shadowed barristers and gained exposure to client conferences and trial preparation.
Prior to commencing his pupillage, Gavin worked as a paralegal under the Corporate Mergers & Acquisitions (“M&A”) team in Rosli Dahlan Saravana Partnership. During his paralegal tenure, he assisted the legal team in reviewing and amending legal and corporate documentation, conducting case law research, and drafting legal articles and meeting minutes. He also worked closely with his supervisors in preparing legal opinions, gaining hands-on experience in legal analysis and professional drafting.
Gavin subsequently commenced his pupillage at Jeff Leong, Poon & Wong, under the Corporate Capital Markets team. Throughout his year as a pupil, he gained extensive experience and exposure into the legal due diligence process of Initial Public Offering’s (“IPO”). His work encompassed a wide range of responsibilities, including managing the preparation of legal due diligence reports, conducting comprehensive compliance legal research, ensuring the proper compilation of legal documents for submission by facilitating the execution and collection of signing pages from the Due Diligence Working Group (“DDWG”) members, drafting progress meeting minutes and verification notes, liaising with fellow members of the DDWG in order to expedite outstanding matters, participating in interviews with key senior management, directors, major customers, and suppliers as part of the due diligence process, and assisting in reviewing and amending Information Memorandums and Draft Circulars to ensure compliance and readiness for submission.
Apart from his legal experiences, Gavin has undertaken positions of responsibility which have helped develop his team working skills and leadership qualities. During his time in Exeter, Gavin was the Publicity Director of Exeter Malaysian Society, where he oversaw social media posts regarding the management and social wellbeing of the society itself. Gavin was called to the Malaysian Bar and admitted to the role of Advocates and Solicitors on 14 March 2025.
He is currently a new Associate under our new unit Equity & Debt Capital Market Practice Group under the supervision of our Senior Partner, Dato’ Azmi Mohd Ali and the Partner, Norhisham Bahrin.
