Lee Li Lian

Lee Li Lian graduated from the University of Malaya with a Second Class (Upper Division) LL.B (Hons) in 2025.

During her studies, she developed a strong interest in litigation, where she also had the privilege of receiving advocacy training under the supervision of YA Puan Shahriza Zalina, currently a Judge of the High Court. She has interned with two prominent Malaysian law firms: Messrs Shafee & Co. and Azmi & Associates where she gained wide exposure to both litigation and corporate practice.

At Shafee & Co., Li Lian was under the guidance of Tan Sri Dr. Muhammad Shafee Abdullah and senior litigation lawyer Sarah Abishegam to assist in several litigation cases. She assisted in the preparation of written submissions for the 1MDB case, one of Malaysia’s most high-profile financial trials. She was also involved in legal research relating to drug trafficking and murder cases, which provided her with deeper understanding of criminal litigation strategies and procedures. On the practical side, she worked on drafting legal opinions, preparing case summaries and analysing evidence, as well as assisting lawyers in document review and drafting, which sharpened her legal writing and analytical skills.

At Azmi & Associates, she trained under Mr. Philip Teoh, a partner of the firm, and took part in several cross-border maritime, insurance and international trade disputes, covering both arbitration and litigation. She conducted extensive legal research and also attended online trial proceedings involving cross-border issues, gaining hands-on exposure to international dispute resolution. In addition, she worked on research relating to real estate and capital & debt market matters, reflecting her versatility across different practice areas.

Li Lian is fluent in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien, which enables her to work effectively with clients from diverse cultural and jurisdictional backgrounds. Through her internships, she has demonstrated strong potential in handling complex cases and an international outlook. She aims to further develop her career in international trade and shipping law, while continuing to grow as a well-rounded legal practitioner with both breadth and depth. Her Master is our Partner, Philip Teoh.
